Obituary

In Loving Memory of Betty Jean "BJ" Martin Betty Jean Martin, lovingly known as BJ, age 74, of Owensboro, Kentucky, peacefully departed this world on July 9, 2025. Born on December 10, 1950, in Lexington, KY, Betty embraced a life of adventure from an early age, shaped by her father's career and her enduring role as a devoted Air Force and Navy wife. Her journey took her across the map—from the heartlands of Kentucky and Texas to the shores of Hawaii, the coasts of Maine, the hills of Italy, and the highlands of Scotland. Each place left its mark on her, as did she on it. Although her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian remained just out of reach, Betty's compassion for animals never waned. She had an instinctive tenderness that drew injured and orphaned creatures to her care. Her love extended to people just as freely—especially her family, her students, and anyone lucky enough to fall within her orbit. Gentle in soul but rich in humor, Betty was a joyful presence—known affectionately as a "goofball" by those closest to her. Whether she was digging in her garden, crafting with care, doting on her beloved grandchildren, or tuning into the Weather Channel, she approached life with curiosity and quiet delight. Her dedication to others shone during her time working at Owensboro nursing homes, where she earned the admiration of residents and coworkers alike. As a Foster Grandparent at Estes Elementary, she left a lasting impression on the children she mentored—a role she treasured deeply. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Juanita Martin of Owensboro. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Martin of Owensboro; three children: Heather Ziegler (Scott) of Covington, TN, Robert Cordell (Lori) of Lonoke, AR, and Michael Cordell of Evansville, IN; her cherished fur baby, Otis; six grandchildren: Naomi Burns (Bert), Chloe Ziegler (Moazam), Roman Ziegler, Tristan Cordell, Sophia Drace, and Adrian Meyer-Cordell; two great-grandchildren, Amara and Ayza Shahzad; and her dear friend Patty Barnes of Owensboro. She carried many titles—sister, mom, mama, grandma, memaw, ggma, and friend—but to those who knew her, she was a treasure, pure and true. The space she leaves behind cannot be filled, but the light of her memory will continue to shine in each heart she touched. True to Betty's gentle spirit and humble wishes, there will be no ceremony. Her cremated remains will be scattered in the beloved landscapes of Maine—a final resting place befitting her love of beauty and peace. Final care for Betty Martin entrusted to McFarland Funeral Home, Inc., 1001 W 5th St., Owensboro, KY 42301. www.mcfarlandfh.com
