Birdie Mae Coleman, age 83, passed peacefully on Saturday, August 15, 2026. A woman of deep faith, strong family values, and devoted service, Birdie touched the lives of many through her kindness, friendship, and generosity.

A proud member of the last graduating class of Western High School, Birdie later worked in the accounting department at General Electric before pursuing her passion for cosmetology. She became a licensed beautician and was the proud owner and sole proprietor of His and Hers Beauty Salon, where she also trained aspiring hairdressers through her apprenticeship program.

Birdie faithfully served her church home, Zion Baptist Church, as President of the Usher Board and as a member of the Pastor’s Aid and Willing Workers committees. In later years, she was also active with the Support Alliance of the Visually Impaired, serving on its Public Relations and Membership and Social Committees.

Above all, Birdie cherished her family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and treasured friend whose laughter, wisdom, compassion, and unconditional love will never be forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Whaylon Coleman Sr.; her parents, Alfred Johnson Sr. and Lela Mae Johnson; her brother, Alfred Johnson Jr.; and other beloved family members.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Danny Dunn and Whaylon Coleman Jr. (Sylvia); her grandchildren, Danisha Hanley, Ivy Lee Samartino (Dennis), Troy Trumbo Coleman, Sr. (Kimberly), Justin M. Coleman, and Akaysha Dunn; her great-grandchildren, Diavion Hanley, Daxton Moss, Jupiter Samartino, and Troy Trumbo Coleman, Jr.; her sister-in-law, Annestein Jean Coleman; her devoted caregivers, James Hunter, Elaine Gaither, and Shanae Posey; her cousin-friend, Jorene Goodwin; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and loved ones.

Birdie’s legacy of faith, family, friendship, and service will forever remain in the hearts of those blessed to know and love her.

A Homegoing Celebration for Mrs. Coleman will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Zion Baptist Church 2311 West 9th Street, Owensboro, KY 42301. Visitation with the family will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. on Friday at the church followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev Larry D Lewis presiding and Rev. Jerrell M. Clark, pastor.

Her burial will take place next to her late husband Whaylon D Coleman, Sr. at a later date in Rosehill Elmwood Cemetery, 1300 Old Hartford Rd, Owensboro, KY 42303.
