George Anthony "Tony" Johnson, age 78, of Owensboro, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 26th at Signature HealthCARE at Hillcrest. Born on March 21, 1947, in Henderson, Kentucky, Tony was the beloved son of the late George E. and Mary F. Johnson. He received his early education through the Henderson County Public School System and went on to build a life rooted in family, faith, and hard work. As a dedicated employee, Tony spent his career with Warner Trucking Company before continuing his working years at Macy's Department Store and Hasgoe Cleaning Company. He was known for his warm presence, dependable nature, and tireless work ethic. Tony found joy in the simple pleasures—being outdoors, sharing laughs with friends, and cherishing time with his grandchildren and loved ones. On September 24, 2011, he married Karen Smith, with whom he shared a deep and loving bond. He is preceded in death by his brothers Charles Johnson and Michael Bruce Johnson; his sister Ida Mae Johnson; and his daughter Kimberly Jackson. Also a son John Gant. Tony leaves behind a rich legacy of love and memories in the hearts of those who survive him: his wife Karen; sons George Anthony Johnson, Jr. of Evansville, IN, Dale Johnson of Henderson, KY, Paul Gant of Henderson, KY, and James Smith, Jr. of Owensboro; brothers Ira Johnson and Terry (Mary) Johnson of Henderson; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and devoted sisters-in-law Nancy (Keith) Gore of Clarksville, TN, Jonell (Michael) Moredock of Owensboro, and Shelia "Annie" Smith of Owensboro. He is also fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Special thanks to the staff at Signature Healthcare at Hilcrest for their services. Tony Johnson's kindness, spirit, and steady presence will be dearly missed and forever remembered. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday July 12, 2025 at McFarland Funeral Home, 1001 W 5th St, Owensboro, KY. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
